The 3M™ Scotch-Brite™ EXL Unitized Wheel XL-UD is a high-quality finishing disc that is particularly well-suited for removing sharp edges (metal burrs) and for final surface finishing. Its construction provides effective results while preserving the part’s geometry without unwanted cuts or gouges.

Key Features

Open structure: The disc is made of a non-woven material in which fibers are combined with an abrasive mineral — silicon carbide. This makes the disc soft, highly conformable, and capable of achieving a fine surface finish.

Durable unitized construction: The fiber web is hardened and compressed to ensure strength and long-lasting durability.

Various density grades: Higher-density versions are more aggressive and best suited for edges, corners, and heavier material removal; lower-density versions are softer, more flexible, and excellent for contoured surfaces.

Load-resistant: The open web structure handles pressure better, reducing clogging and extending the disc’s lifespan.

Reduced heat build-up: The construction minimizes heat generation, making the disc suitable for use on temperature-sensitive materials.

Resists smearing: Helps keep the surface cleaner and reduces the need for additional preparation.

Applications

  • Ideal for deburring — for example, removing excess metal after milling or drilling.

  • Surface finishing and blending on contoured or shaped parts.

  • Suitable for work on metal alloys, plastics, or composite materials where precise surface treatment is required with minimal alteration of part geometry.

Technical Specifications

  • Size: ⌀ 125 mm × 12 mm

  • Grit: Available in options such as “2S FIN” and “2A MED” (fine and medium)

  • Abrasive mineral: Primarily silicon carbide, providing sharp cutting and efficient finishing.

Advantages

  • Reduces material loss: Removes burrs without causing deep cuts or damage to the part.

  • Long service life: Thanks to the durable unitized construction.

  • Versatile use: Suitable for both fine finishing and more aggressive surface preparation, depending on the density grade.

  • Shorter work time: The disc’s structure minimizes clogging and works efficiently even under intensive use.

Safety and Tips

  • Use an appropriate backing plate and the correct tool (such as an angle grinder) to ensure stable disc performance.

  • Do not press the disc excessively — let the abrasive do the work.

  • Monitor temperature: although the disc manages heat well, always follow tool and material guidelines regarding pressure and speed.

  • After heavy use, inspect the disc — if fibers appear worn or the abrasive is depleted, it is recommended to replace the disc.
